Our fantastic Maths outreach event, designed to stretch and challenge your Year 5 students, is back for another year - and your school’s invited!
As part of ‘We’ve Got Problems!’, we are inviting teams of four Year 5 pupils for a day of accessible puzzles and challenges, where they’ll learn to apply new knowledge to tasks and work as a team.
The teams will need to be accompanied by a staff member from your school, please note this doesn't need to be a teacher and the staff member will not be supervising the pupils during the day. They will only be in attendance for safeguarding reasons. Hymers College staff will lead all activities and so your staff member will be free to bring their own work with them, (wifi connection will be available).
Running alongside this event is our Year 5 English outreach event - ‘We’ve Got Issues!’. You are welcome to bring a team to both events if you wish.
The outreach events are running on the following dates, between 9.40am and 2.40pm.

A strategy game for two players. Your pupils will get the opportunity to play the game and develop the best strategies to win the game. A tournament will then be played where all schools will play each other in a round-robin format.
This activity allows the pupils to develop their skills in understanding rules and instructions, spatial awareness and pattern spotting.

The pupils will learn about the equation of a straight line (lasers) and the motion of a projectile (cannons). These topics are covered on GCSE and A Level specifications, but are delivered in an accessible way to suit Year 5s. This leads into an interactive activity where the pupils control the lasers and cannons to hit the targets to score points.
The activity demonstrates to the pupils how changing two parameters can affect the outcomes of events in different ways. It utilises a trial and improvement approach to solving problems in a challenging and interactive way.

This activity uses knowledge that the pupils will already have. The main focus of this activity is teamwork. The pupils will work together to solve an extended task involving fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and area.
The pupils will consolidate their understanding of proportion and the equivalence of fractions, decimals and percentages. The main learning will be about cooperation and communication: the ability to follow instructions is a must.

‘What does this number machine do?’ is the question raised in this activity.
The pupils will learn about modulo arithmetic, a topic not covered until university degree level courses. However, modulo arithmetic is related to the quotient and remainder when a whole number is divided by another whole number and is accessible to pupils who can divide 25 by 8 and get 3 remainder 1.
Once the topic has been introduced, the pupils will complete an interactive task where they are faced with several number machines and they must test them out to find out what operations they perform.
Pupils will consolidate their mental arithmetic skills whilst developing their interest in mathematics and gain their first insight into number theory!
